New Commemorative Banknote in Kazakhstan with MOTION SURFACE®
Five Questions for Arman Adibayev, Director of Cash Department, National Bank of Kazakhstan
The National Bank of Kazakhstan has started a phased release of a new banknote series based on elements of the “Saka style”, capturing the heritage of Kazakhstan. The new series is aimed at increasing the security of tenge banknotes, and the RAPID® Vision security threads from Crane Currency used in the 10000, 5000, 2000, and 1000 tenge banknotes have claimed much attention.
Victory Day, observed in many countries, continues to serve as a powerful symbol of peace and remembrance and in May 2025, the world marked its 80th anniversary. To honor this historic milestone, the National Bank of Kazakhstan announced the release of a 1000 tenge commemorative banknote
Crane Currency was proud to partner with the National Bank on this special banknote with a bold and inspiring micro-optic MOTION SURFACE® stripe as its primary security feature.

“We acted out of recognition that those who experienced or were directly impacted by the war are now few. We wanted to honor them while there was still time. As the National Bank, issuing a commemorative banknote seemed a fitting tribute.”
“We had a dual goal of producing a quantity and a denomination that is accessible to a large number of people and still be in alignment with market needs and costs.”

Can you elaborate on the banknote design? How are the circling cranes significant?
“The design draws on national archives and collective memory, centered around a powerful symbol – the white crane. In Kazakhstan, this bird embodies remembrance and gratitude for those who served. Cranes know no borders, reflecting shared history, unity, and kinship. Soaring gracefully, they symbolize the uplifted human spirit and the hope and prosperity that followed the war’s end.”
Is the red micro-optic stripe a new security feature technology?
“It is the latest embodiment of the MOTION SURFACE® stripe. We selected it because it creates a unique visual experience that fits the solemnity of the design. There is a deep three-dimensionality to accentuate the flight of the Cranes and movement that animates the Eternal Flame.”
“Yes, they are proudly printed in Kazakhstan in the Banknote Factory of the National Bank of Kazakhstan. Wider distribution through the National Bank and commercial banks will follow later this year. This interval ensures sufficient time for distribution across all regions of Kazakhstan and the adaptation of equipment, such as ATM’s, payment terminals, and other cash-handling devices.”
